Double curved walls
« on: February 22, 2022, 06:46:11 PM »
Hi

We have an issue with applying some shingles to double curved walls. Anyone that might have some solutions for this?

On corners it gives us these errors.

And is it in the render? The viewport doesn't always have to match the render?

I think maybe the solution on the lower part is ok also in the corners. But the top of the ceiling as you can see on the attached gives us even more troubles.

Anyone knows about a Railclone shark that might be able to help us with the setup? At the moment we are trying with some splines either vertical or horizontal to distribute the shingles on the hole surface.

We are hoping to find a parametric solution to the problem so we have some possibility to make some adjustments

Are you able to share a sample file so we can take a look at this?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi, guys! The general idea is to distribute shingles along the curved wall evenly with a shift on every other row and adjusted angle as we go from bottom to top (see images below).

So far we've tryed Forest on surface, Railclone along splines and Corona Scatter on surface. Last one gave the best results but still not quite there yet. My idea is that simplyfing geometry would help but we still need to keep that curve and the shingles are going crazy on corners and closer to bottom. Same goes with Forest. And regarding Railclone we're not quite shure where to go as it is the one we're least familiar with).

I'm also attaching the examples and the file. So maybe you can help us in which direction should we go to achieve the desired result.

Hi,

Thanks for the extra information.

RailClone's surface tools are a little limited at the moment. Rather than follow the polygons or the UVs like a paneling tool, in RailClone geometry is projected along the RC object's local Z axis until it hits the surface's geometry. This means that it only works well when the face normal points towards the RC object.Forest Pack's UV Mode may be  a better option, but of course the geometry won't be deformed.

Another option might be to use the SlideKnit script which allows you to flatten the surface, apply the high poly object and then morph the surface back to its original shape, deforming the geometry in the process. You can read more about it here: https://forum.itoosoft.com/railclone-pro-(*)/interesting-structure-help-needed-)/msg13397/#msg13397

I hope that helps.
