Vray Proxy - Unhandled Exemption
« on: August 10, 2015, 11:53:59 AM »
Hi,

I'm using Vray Proxys with Railclone and when I go to render the scene I receive the error

"UNHANDLED EXEMPTION: Compiling geometry
Last marker is at ./src/vrenderlight.cpp, line 565: VRenderLightObj::update() ..."

If I turn off the railclone object and just render the proxys it works fine.
It was working fine till I made some adjustments to my proxys and now if I create a new railclone object or a new scene the problem persists.

Thanks
Eoin

Hi,

We haven''t had any reports of this issue with RailClone before now. To help us get to the bottom of the issue, would it be possible to send us a stripped scene to support@itoosoft.com using WeTransfer or another similar file sharing service? If you could include information on your version of 3ds Max, RailClone and V-Ray that would be great.

Many thanks!

Paul

Hi Paul,

I'm using 3ds Max 2014 x64, VRay is version 3.20.02 and Railclone is version 2.5.0

I've sent the shot i was working on to you along with the vraylog file through wetransfer.

Thanks
Eoin

The issue seems to have fixed itself with a reboot and a new scene, but the old one still has the same issue. No worries for now, hopefully the problem doesn't reappear.

Thanks Eoin,

OK, I'm glad to hear it's fixed itself. Thanks for the files, we're just taking a look but I can't reproduce the issue yet. If the problem persists if you able to send a version with a couple of the V-Ray proxies that cause the error that would be great. Ideally we need a file that replicates the issue when rendered so we may need the proxies and maps.

Many thanks,

Paul

Paul,

As I developed the shot on I encountered the same issue again. I've sent you the necessary files through wetransfer for the old shot, as the new one has way too many animated proxys, at 100-300 MB each, to send.
So that's proxys and textures and the original scene that was giving me the problem. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks
Eoin

Hi Eoin,

Thanks for the files. I have discovered that negative frame offsets on three of the V-Ray proxies is causing the issue with RailClone.

If you set this to a positive value (and avoid negative values in future for now) the scene appears to render without errors.  You will need to do this immediately after opening Max and before rendering the problematic scenes, as there appear to be caching issues if it has already been rendered. We'll look into this problem, but hopefully this will work as a fix until then.

I hope that helps, but please let me know if it doesn't resolve the problem.

Many thanks,

Paul

p.s. if you are creating randomised animations by duplicating and offsetting a number of proxies you may find this quick script handy.

Thanks Paul,

That seems to have sorted it out alright. And nice one for the script and all the support.

Cheers

Paul,

Is it possible to use Vray RT with the Railclone proxys? It works fine with the standard Vray proxys but when I try to view the Railclone object through it I just get the actual proxy mesh in the render viewport.

Thank
Eoin

Hi Eoin,

Thanks for reporting this issue, I can reproduce it here.

Unfortunately V-Ray RT does not have an SDK and the RailClone implementation was handled by Chaos Group using our API. I have emailed them about this problem and hopefully it can be resolved in a future release.  In the meantime, if you set the Proxy Object's Display setting to Show Whole Mesh it should render fine.  If you want to cut down on the number of polygons being displayed in the viewports you can still select the V-Ray Proxies, right click and select Object Properties and then turn on Display as Box.

I hope that helps.

Many thanks,

Paul
