Title: Wish: More information on numeric\math nodes
Post by: Asplan Viak on June 03, 2013, 05:26:32 PM
I saw the video of the parametric bookshelf, and thought it was a nice example.
Personally, me being rather mathematically handicapped, I would really like some more documentation and perhaps some examples in the online docs about using these math operations to set up rules etc.
I hope I'm not alone in needing some help in this area  :-[

I add your suggestion for incoming tutorials.

If that helps, the numerical nodes are commonly used together Exported Parameters (http://www.itoosoft.com/railclone/reference/refedparameters.php). You can find more information in the previous link.

Ah, yes, I was aware of using them on exported\exposed values. Will you be adding other parameters to be exported? Like for generators for example?
As far as I can see, making a complete tutorial is probably more time consuming (especially the video variants) than adding smaller examples in the documentation.
I actually prefer reading text and seeing the odd screen shot rather than sitting back and passively watching a video.
I seem to fall asleep a lot while watching video tuts for some reason.

I was thinking that these more theoretical nodes need some practical examples and related descriptions compared to the other more "hands on" types of nodes. I sense great potential in opening up as many parameters as possible to be controlled via math nodes and the likes.

What parameters exactly ? Now it is possible to export all numeric parameters from Generators.

Regarding the tutorials, we like to create different teaching material: short and extensive tutorials, sample scenes, tips and so. I suggest you take a look to the RailClone blog (http://www.railclone.com). We will publish many content there.

Hi. Sorry for my late reply again.

On closer inspection I now see that there is a compete set of exportable parameters on the Gen's.
Not sure why I didn't notice earlier.

Will you at a later point clean up the parameters you expose out of RC to max? As it is, it's not possible( really hard) to see what you are wiring when trying to do some parameter wiring. (Trying to make my RC objects even more parametric with variable segment sizes etc).

Sorry, i don't understand. Each parameter can be renamed and include a tooltip, and you can export only the needed parameters from nodes. What do you mean exactly with clean up ?

If you want to "unexport" a parameter, just click it again with right click->Export.

No. I'm talking about the native parameter wiring in max. Hooking up a box's width parameter into RC's nodes would be great, I.E so one could change the width/height of segments through RCs spinners.
There are of course even more advanced uses for this. If I try to wire anything into RC at the moment, it lists up "Global scale", "rotation" and a whole lot of entries named "NONE".
I'd like those "NONE" entries to be renamed to what the actually are.

Ok, i see. Unfortunately it's not possible to use wiring with exported parameters, because the values are stored as an array in an unique parameter (if not, we could not create them dinamically). They are not even visible in the wiring interface (Max doesn't handle them).

Instead, they are scriptable: http://www.itoosoft.com/railclone/reference/refparameters.php#d (http://www.itoosoft.com/railclone/reference/refparameters.php#d)

I'm not sure if we can remove those NONE entries (mostly are obsolete parameters from RC 1.x). We must check it.
