Mitered corners
« on: February 28, 2017, 09:37:06 PM »
How would I go about making this siding style so that where the corners meet it creates a 90 (two 45 angles) like a mitered siding plank. The house I am working on doesn't have the usual corner boards that cover this seam up. I was thinking to cut the segment geo at a 45 but the clipping spline cuts it straight. I attached the max file to see how I have it set up the style originally.

Thanks

Hi,

By using the Extend X/Y Size to Area feature, it's not currently possible to apply any bevelling, but in case, you'll change the style slightly to use the X Spline (with that corner), under the Tile mode you can select the Bevel Mode (like the Extend as shown on the attached screen-shot). Attaching a modified scene. Hope you'll find it useful.

Thats great! thank you so much. Makes sense, now if I want to clip out the windows/doors, will I be able to do it on more then one axis? Is there a trick for that? I see I can use a closed spline to cut out x or y but if I have windows on both elevations? I know I could use an edit poly modifier and do it manually but its really nice to keep things parametric in case there is client changes.

Thanks again, really appreciate the help!

One thing I just noticed is that if I change the size of the Y spline the height stays the same. Why is the y spline necessary? or how do I make it control the height?

Hi,

That's because the Y Mode has been set to Free (and the Y Size is used instead). The attached version is using the Y Mode - Aligned and any changes in the Y Spline will be applied. It's possible to project the Clipping Area just in one axis. The workaround where you want to take advantage of the Bevel feature on corners, would be to split the style into multiple Generators (in a similar way as in the attached scene). Hope you'll find it useful.
