Xreffed scene has missing objects in viewport

Example: one RC object places three sets of columns along a spline.

In my parent parent scene only two are visible despite them all being contained in one object.

Strange issue, i cannot reproduce the problem here. Please, send us a test scene with this problem.

Im having  internet installed at the moment  Im away next week so wont have time to look at it yet.

Could there be a problem because system units of parent scene is inches, xref with itoo is in cm?

iToo:
Not really. Max should scale all XRefs automatically.

Anyway, be sure that "Customize->Units Setup->System Unit Setup->Respect System Units in Files" is on.
