Creating a custom railing?
« on: July 19, 2011, 02:47:27 AM »
Hello,
I am trying to create a custom handrail and am not having luck.  I would like to have a handrail similar to the "Metal Handrail 1" but want the cross members to be stainless steel stranded cable and not the metal tubes.  Can you point me in the right direction? Do i modify the existing Metal Handrail segments? Or copy this style altogether and then modify them as my own? Or are there more styles available to download?  Any advice and help would be appreciated.  I like Railclone alot! Its great for my needs.  If i can learn how to create custom content, I will be very happy!

To customize a library element, please follow this procedure:

1 - Open the library catalog, and copy the handrail library to a user folder (drag and drop in the folder tree).
2 - Right click on the library and select "Open in shell", and open the .max file
3 - Select the railclone object, select each segment and extract the geometry as instance (right most button, below list):

                http://www.itoosoft.com/railclone/reference/refsegments.php

4 - Modify the segments, editiong faces or geometry. RailClone object will change automatically.
5 - Delete extracted instance and save .max
6 - Change thumbsnails and descriptions for the new item.

About additional styles we are preparing new libraries of styles that will be included on following plugins releases. If you will like that we add some specific elements or categories we are open to any suggestions.  :)

I am following your instructions here but am having one problem.  When i go and try to use one of my newly made railclone objects, i get an error message "Error Loading Material Library: c;\users\xxxx\Documents\railclone\lib\vray.mat"

Any idea how to fix this?

Have you assigned a material in "Override Material" properties ? If so, There are two possible causes for this error:

1) The material library cannot be found in the specified path: c;\users\xxxx\Documents\railclone\lib\vray.mat. (by the way, it should be c: not c;)
2) The .mat file is not compatible with the Max version (i.e. using a .mat of Max 2014 in 2013).
