No instances ... ?
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:53:00 AM »
Hello,

I try to build a simple fence on a sloped terrain in debug mode. The fence is very simple. Only 2 segments: a post as "Start segment", "End segment" and "Corner segment", and a mesh as "evenly segment". The matter is that only the posts are instanced, not the meshes which fill the evenly areas of my fence.
I checked "VRay/Mental Ray shader" box in the "Display" section but I had to let "Slice" checked for the evenly mesh.
As a result, VRay takes huge amount of time and RAM to do the render (I even had to stop it before it starts rendering).
By the way: a thing I don't understand very much is the difference between "default construction rule" and "evenly construction rule". In which case must I use the first one ? the second one ? I suppose it has something to deal with my problem.

Could someone please help me ?

Thank you in advance  :)

The "evenly" rule is used to place pieces evenly spaced along the spline, usually posts. Instead, the default segment is cloned to fill all gaps between the other constructions rules (corner, evenly and so).

RailClone creates instances for all segments that don't need to be deformed, currenly this includes: bending, slicing and vertical deform. Since there are multiples ways to build a same object using RailClone, we would need to check your object to know where is the problem.

Please, upload a test scene here or by e-mail. Don't forget to include the base spline as well, because the sloped terrain may have a great impact on the result.

The default segment was longer that the distance between posts (2.55 m, defined by the evenly rule), so RailClone was creating a single SLICED piece between posts, which never was instanced.

I have shortened the default segment a bit, enough to make it shorter that 2.55 m. In this way, now fits two pieces between posts: one large (a full default segment that is instanced), plus one additional tiny segment needed to complete the wall until the next post. The key is that although this second segment must be sliced, the number of polygons is significative lower than in the original scene (in fact, it is not even visible for the standard posts).

I had to modify the pivots of the objects as well (left aligned for default, and centered for the post). I have sent to you the modifed scene by e-mail.

THANK YOU it's ok now   :)
