Spline Markers - First impressions
« on: July 03, 2019, 11:14:08 PM »
Hi.
I have tested Spline Markers and first impressions are great!

Maybe some enhancement requests:
1: Option for gizmo size/color
2. Show Index Spline in Viewport (size/color)
3. Custom User Data list (name + value)

Best Regards

Hi, I'm glad you enjoy RCSpline !

1. Unfortunately it's not possible to change the size of text. Max uses a fixed size font, and is not customizable.
The marker itself would be changed between several available types, same with the color.
If that helps, we use the standard "Gizmos" color, which is actually customizable from Max (Customize->Customize User Interface->Color->Gizmos->Gizmos).

2) Agreed. Added to the wishlist.

3) I discussed this issue with our team for a while: i see the point to use a customizable data list for User Data, instead numeric values. But the problem is where to store that customization.
Assuming you want to reuse it, it has no sense to customize the list each time you add a RCSpline modifier.

Ideally the data list should be linked in some way with the RC object, but there is not a simple way to link a Modifier used in a Spline, with a RC Object which uses that Spline.
Also it would require to add a complete system in RC, to edit and save multiple data list for different types of RCSpline modifiers. Everything saved in the RC style... really complex.
We continue evaluating possible options for this feature.

Thanks for your suggestions.

When I create a generator for User it will be useful to have custom Names just for the representation of parameter. For use in an Expression, we can still use a single alphabet.
Something like this.

Hi
Please, we really need more Data inputs  ;). I think we can live with a limited number.
I know we have MarkerID and even old fashion Spline ID but Data Input is so useful.

Next:
I don't see any good use of Reference option for now.
As far as I can see now Reference is in use From the selected point and it will affect all point after this(LS1, default, start, end, corner included).
eg. I set Bezier-Corner it will affect on everything after the selected point.
Even more, it will start to calculate at the vertex+1 position.

I expected that Reference will act more like a usual "filter" option: perform an operation only on Bezier-Corner.

So, My Use of Reference will be more like:
I want to do something only on Bezier-Corner vertex and for `vertex` field I want to select which vertex will be included (a list of vertex position with comma or space separated)

Hope that makes you any sense.

EDIT:
max2015 file added:

No, Reference only defines the position of the current Marker. For example, Dist. 30 cm. Corner 1 = at 30 cm. from the first vertex of type "Corner".
And for Percentages, distance is defined as relative to the next vertex of the same type: Dist. 20% Corner 1 = from the first "Corner" vertex, at 20% of the distance until the next "Corner" vertex.

Both Distance and Percentage accept negative values (needed for references from "End" vertex).

Please note that "Corner", is the type of vertex in the spline. It has no relation with the RC "Corners".
For this reason, Corner 1 would match with the first vertex if the spline (if this is of type Corner).

Carlos, thank you for clarification.

What about more data inputs?

I agree with your suggestion. We're evaluating how to implement it.
Please don't rely on the current implementation of User Data (for productions scenes, i mean), in case we change it.

Yes, I`m only in `test mode`for now.  ;)
Just suffix A,B,C,D,E,F,G... will do do job

Hi,
It is a good thing that we can select multiple Markers on Sub Level directly in Viewport and edit.
Problem is placing Markers when we have a lot of Sub splines. Now we have to click on each individual SubSpline.
Some Auto placing will be nice.

Best Regards.

Hi, you can turn the "All" checkbox to apply the Markers to all sub-splines.

Yes, I know that but I`m talking about setting an individual Marker for every SubSpline.
That way I can later select Markers (sub level) directly in Viewport and edit. It is more manageable selecting Markers that way opposite to selecting them in the Marker List.

402b, great!
Thank you for User Data!
Very useful to have Data Set!
I guess  Boolean type is too complicated (checkbox window)?.
It will be nice to have a Boolean type as well, although integer 0/1 will do the job.

Still looking forward for:
`2. Show Index Spline in Viewport (size/color)`
and
One click for auto-placement one marker on each subspline.

Best Regards
Dragan

Hi, i'm glad you enjoy the changes in 4.02 !

We know a checkbox for booleans would be nice, but there is not a simple way to change dinamically the controls in Max rollouts.
By now we'll keep the existing types and we'll see for next versions.

Your other suggestions are in the to-do list. No promises, but i hope everything is available before the stable release.

Thanks.

One click solution for auto-placement one marker on each subspline.

Any chance we can expect ii in future updates?
