Size of XfrogPlants
« on: August 14, 2013, 11:07:43 PM »
Hi,

Is there something up with the units of the XfrogPlants in 3ds Max ?

Their PDF's says one size and when I open the corresponding file in 3ds Max it's much smaller, ie a 4m tree (according to the catalogue PDF) was 0.87m once opened in 3ds Max. The files system units are in inches and display units metres, it measured 0.87m. They are all like it. I'm using 3ds Max 2013.

??  :o  ??

Maybe it's just too long a day today :)

I just tried loading one model (Africa->Umbrella Acacia) and everything seems correct, both from the Max file and using the library browser.

Please, be sure that Customize->Units Setup->System Units Setup->Respect System Units in Files is on. Some time ago other customer had the same problem because this setting.

Hi Carlos,

Just tried that Umbrella tree and yup that measures fine for me too.

Can you try EU_Shrubs (SH10_Populus_Tremula) and any of those. They are very small.

I'm getting a message of 'obsolete data format found ---please resave file' on all the max files from the Shrubs set.

I did some tests and it seems to depend on the library, some are ok while others pop up with this obsolete message and are the wrong scale.

Cheers,
Colin

Yes, you are right: this plant is only 0.4m tall. It doesn't match with the PDF.

I will report the problem to XFrog Inc.

Cool, I thought I was doing something wrong  :D

I've not had a chance to look through all the libraries, only just bought them so it may be happening with other libraries too.

Thanks for looking into it.

Hi, according to XFrog team, these plants are scaled by design:

Quote
This is by design.

As shrubs, groundcover, and flowers, are very small in size compared to trees, we used a 10x scale for those libraries. Otherwise they would appear very tiny when opened next to a large tree. A somewhat odd idea but we decided scale them all by 10x

Regarding the "obsolete data format" message, XFrog Max scenes are created using an old Max version for maximum compatibility. You can ignore the warning.

Thanks for the info. I'll apply that scale factor to the vegetation as and when required.
