Animate Direction of Lights with Effect or Map
« on: October 08, 2023, 09:47:05 AM »
Hello all,

I am working on a scene in which I'd like to animate the orientation & movement of a large number of V-Ray Lights using Forest Pack. I am scattering the lights along a spline using the "path" distribution method, and I am controlling the orientation of the lights with the transform controls.

There are a few ways I can animate the movement of any object - for example, with an animated noise map in the transform roll-out, or by using an effect (3-axis look-at effect) combined with an animated helper object.

These techniques work fine for normal geometry, but it seems that Forest Pack does not behave the same way when the reference objects are V-Ray Lights. In my viewport before rendering, the lights will move according to whatever technique I apply, but at render time the Forest Pack-generated lights are static, and they do not change according to the movement I am previewing in the viewport.

Is this a known limitation, or am I doing something wrong?

I am using Forest Pack 7.1.2. I know that the Light-scattering features of Forest Pack have been updated since this version, but my studio has not updated to the latest versions yet.

Is this even possible, to animate the direction & orientation of the lights? Thanks!

Hi,

Upon my quick test, the mentioned setup works just fine in the latest version (FP 8.2.4 & V-Ray 6 Update 1.2) - since the Forest Pack 7.2.1 we added support for native light instancing in V-Ray (which requires V-Ray 5.2 or greater).

Best regards,

Ok, great! Thank you for the info. I've been meaning to update our systems, so this is just one more reason to do so. Thanks again.
