Octane, support for scattering smaller scatters
« on: October 04, 2024, 03:56:42 PM »
Hello guys,
I can't get one forest scatter to scatter another smaller scatter in Octane, I can see it fine in Max viewport but OctaneRender Viewport it does not show. This works fine in Vray.
Does anyone know if this is supported and an issue with Octane or ForestPack?

In the render tab if I set to proxy instead of mesh I can see the proxy but when set as mesh I do not see the smaller scatters.

Worth asking here first as Octane forum is dead.
Thank you

Ok I think I've got it working, needed to explicitly set mode == mesh in the render tab of the smaller scatter.

Is there a performance difference when doing this? Are the scattered scatters, instances of this mesh?

Unfortunately, I cannot get this 'Randomising Procedural Objects with Forest Pack Tutorial' to work with octane though, I can see in Max viewport they are randomised but OctaneRender Viewport just shows the same scatter. Even when switching back to proxies and no meshes and setting render node to automatic... Is this a limitation on Octane or Forestpack?

Hi, As you pointed out, to use nested Forest objects in Octane, it's necessary to set the inner Forest to 'Meshes'.

Unfortunately, I cannot get this 'Randomising Procedural Objects with Forest Pack Tutorial' to work with octane though, I can see in Max viewport they are randomised but OctaneRender Viewport just shows the same scatter. I'm afraid this is a limitation of the Octane implementation.
Animated samples are not supported for this render engine, only Animation->'Follow Geometry' is supported.
