Old scenes crashing with new forest
« on: July 05, 2024, 10:29:02 am »
Hi,

It's a bit of a long shot, because i can't send you scenes. They usually are pretty big, and a few years old.
Back then we probably used 3dsmax 2020 with forest 712.
We then moved to max 2023, and that would solve few issues with forest 8.
but opening scenes from 2020 and old forest 712 often crashes.

This week i moved to max 2025.1 and forest 904beta hoping it would solve things, since i need to work on one of those project again.
But scenes tend to crash as soon as i unhide the layer with all my forest objects.
The autoback becomes corrupt and i can't open the scene anymore.
I can't merge into a new max file either, it crashed 3dsmax.

What would be a safe way to convert those old scenes, so the forest objects are up to date, "converted" let's say, so that we can continue and use them ?

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear you're facing these troubles. Can you please save and send us the minidump file of the crash? Hopefully, it'll point to the problem source. Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Thanks for your reply.

i uploaded two dump files, the #1 is with the main scene, and the #2 is with a save selected only of that "green" layer

by the way, when you make a "save selected" with few forests selected, it's not saving the source objects from groups, leaving you empty forest

Thank you for providing these files. Based on the minidumps you've shared, it appears that the issue arises during material processing. However, without the scene, we can't determine which Forest object is causing the problem. I recommend merging these objects one by one to identify the problematic one and review the materials used.

I hope this approach resolves the issue. Please let us know if you need further assistance.

Best regards,
