V-Ray and Automaterial?

Hi,

Is it possible to return that V-Ray uses Automaterial?

I had created a very practical geometry cutting system using VrayBlendMtl with an invisible material, this was done using Automaterial, and now I would have to do it for each geometry in the list, which would be a lot more work.

In Forest Pack 6, I always used VrayBlendMtl to mix the Forest Automaterial, with an invisible material (Opacity 0), using a VrayDistanceTex that takes a geometry to make this mix.
This way I can cut Forest geometries that cross architectural elements without much effort.
In Forest Pack 7 this is no longer possible, it seems to ignore any material I create using the Automaterial it produces, this for me is a huge problem.

Would it be possible to work like that again?

As for "Automaterial" I use it the same nomenclature as it is in the Release Notes of Forest 7:

"Other Improvements

Supports GBUFFER - object  ID in V-Ray.
Added support for 'Instance ID' when using VRayUVWRandomizer and VRayMultiSubTex with Forest Pack.
Improved randomness for other Distribution modes than "Image". Previous versions would create visible patterns.
To keep the distribution of existing scenes, this is applied only to new FP objects.
If you want to "upgrade" your FP object so it works as created with FP7, select it and run from Maxscript: $.trees.resetCreatedVersion()

V-Ray now uses the materials assigned to each Custom Object, instead of the Automaterial."

No matter how hard I try, I can't overwrite the material of a Forest object in version 7. I think this has changed between versions 6 and 7.

Thanks for detailed explanation what You want to do.

We have never encouraged tinkering with forest automaterial. It is meant to be managed by ForestPack.
In ForestPack 7 it is used only for viewport. When rendering objects material is used unless overridden in objects material slot.


Anyway- You can create this setup manually.
I find rappatools (free version has this function too) to do the hard job- making shared multi-sub material for all the items.

Once it creates multi material, You can do the override blending as You used to.

Thanks for the explanation, no doubt it's a way to help solve my problem.

However, in version 6, I was able to apply a material on the Forest object, it kept generating the Automaterial, but it rendered the material that I applied on top. This no longer seems to be possible in version 7.

Wouldn't it be possible to work like this again?

I am sorry, maybe You missed, above the workaround I have answered Your question already:

There is no way/plan to enable this old behaviour.
