vray rt forest pro trees render as solid
« on: August 08, 2015, 01:35:40 PM »
As the titles says when I use vray-rt the trees rendering as solid geometry but when I use vray-adv I dont have this problem. Also I am getting an error as you can see in the screenshot in vray when I load the forest pro trees and the activeshade freezes.

Are those Laubwerk trees?
You should switch vieport mode to something else from convex hull in tree object:

This was a known issue with Laubwerk and V-Ray RT, but i'm repeating some tests and now it works fine in all modes.
I'm not sure if Laubwerk or ChaosGroup changed something in the latest releases.

I'm using Max 2014, FP 4.4.1, V-Ray 3.20.03 and Laubwerk 1.0.16.

Yes the trees are the laubwerk.I read this solution from here http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=2002.0 and finally this trick fixed the problem. I also have a problem with the 2D  forest trees from the library not rendering with  vrayRT. I have to fill some mountains with trees and I want to use the included 2D trees from the forest pro library to save some GPU memory.

Please double check that billboard materials use Forest Material + VRayMtl.

In previous versions we were using Forest Material + Standard mtl, but this configuration is not supported by V-Ray 3 (because the Standard material).
In the latest releases we have modified our material libraries to use VRayMtl for 2D plants.

I checked the billboard material and I see in the forest material it has a  basemat (VrayMtl) as base material and also a standart blue color material. I have installed the latest forest pro, how can I fix this? Also when I use some grass preset to fill an area around my building I get the above error from vray rt (Error during vray rt "reexportNode"). I tried to disable some grass from my scene, restarted max and the problem dissapeared but when I tried to enable back the grass again or place new grass the error came again. With forest pro trees I never have this problem. So is something related to the grass/flowers preset. I am using vray 3.20.03 with 3dsmax 2016.

Hi,

Would you please send us a screenshot of that V-Ray RT error message? Are you facing these troubles with some of Forest Pack's grass presets or it's specific for some of your grass models?

Also let me mention, that as commented in this "Vray Embree + Forest Pack = massive rendertime?" topic: "... we've been informed by Chaos Group team about changes introduced in the V-Ray 3.20.03 and we'll recompile Forest Pack with that latest V-Ray release soon." It might be related.

Best regards,

The screenshot with the error is on the first post already. I am facing this problem from the forest pack preset grass. I work with activeshade vray-rt and when this occurs the activeshade stops refreshing and I have this error message on the top left  as you can see. If I disable the grass and restart 3dsmax the problem dissapear, so I am sure that it has to do with the grass.
What do you suggest? uninstall this version of vray and use the older one or wait until you release the updated forest pro version ? The deadline for my project is approaching and I dont have much time.

Also along with the vray RT error sometimes some of the grass field disappears and I have those cross marks in its place. Do you know what they mean and if they are related to the problem I have?

The upgrade which mentions Michal affects only to the performance improvements included in V.Ray 3.20.03, but not to this problem. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

I'm making some tests with grass presets and V-Ray RT 3.20.03 (ActiveShade), but cannot reproduce the problem. Anyway the error is generated by V-Ray, not by Forest. Unfortunately we have not access to the RT render engine.
Please, would you submit this issue directly to ChaosGroup ?  They will be more helpful to identify the problem. Thanks.

Regarding the billboards, i'm checking it and you are right: don't render with RT. It may work, but applying several changes:

1) Remove "Forest Material" and use VRayMtl direclty.
2) It seems GIFs are not supported in RT: replace the .gif opacity map by a different format (i.e. png).
3) Apply a "MeshSelect" to the Forest object, so it's recognized as a valid mesh object.

The implementation of Forest in V-Ray RT is completely different from V-Ray Adv. That is the reason of these limitations.

The dissapearing issue is caused by the way that Nitrous works: in the latest Max releases, viewports are drawn in background using a separated thread. Since Forest generates differentes geometries for viewport and render, ocasionally Max may redraw the render state instead the viewport.

Unfortunately we cannot fix that. Anyway, if you click Display->Update All after closing ActiveShade, that should rebuild all Forest objects correctly.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the information, I am going to write a message to chaosGroup regarding this problem.
Another problem I found today is the color tint setting from the forest object when using the Vray RT, it doesn't change the color of the trees. But in vray Adv it does. Is it a limitation of the VrayRT or there is a setting somewhere to enable it?

It's a limitation of V-Ray RT. You can see the supported features for each engine here.

ok, so is there any other easy way that works in VrayRT to just darken a little or brighten the main leaf color of the trees and the grass from the library? I want for example to make them more dark green to match better with my scene and other objects.
Also finally I found out what is causing the problem with the Vray error, I just deleted the vray physical camera and tried the activeshade from the perspective view and the error gone. Then I found that also the vray physical camera is missing from the create options. I was using 3dsmax 2014 when I started this project I am working now. On 3dsmax 2016 only vray dome camera is there now. So its something to do with a corrupt vray installation I think, but I reinstalled vray several times and didnt fixed the problem. Do you know if there is any .ini file in 3dsmax that handles those options?

update:
Tried also the 3dsmax physical camera now and the error is back again. I dont know what to think.

Can I send you a part of my scene to investigate if there something wrong that interacts with the forest pro grass ? Its very strange because if I enable only the trees in my scene activeshade works, but if I enable the grass I get the error. switching from the camera  to perspective view works with grass and trees. Creating an empty scene and put some grass works also without a problem.

In Max 2016 the V-Ray physical camera has been integrated into the Max core, although i don't know the technical details. Probably that is the reason you cannot find it in the V-Ray tab (i'm out of the office now and cannot check it).

I suggest you contact directly with ChaosGroup regarding this issue. Unfortunately there is not much we can do, because we have not control over the instancing or rendering process in RT.

As always, we are willing to collaborate with them to solve this problem if needed. Thanks.
