RailClone Pro (*) / Re: Array 2S - Unique Spline Outlines

In such scenario, adding a Linear 1S Generator to your style to handle borders "separately" would be the recommendable way.

Generally, clipping is an issue. We've been asked about it before and we did actually implement a solution in a previous release but unfortunately, it had to be removed because it could not be correctly UV mapped. Unfortunately, this was a limitation of the Max SDK. In some cases, you might find handy the VRayDistanceTex map to perform a render-time boolean and a capping effect in a very similar way as explained in this post.

Hope that helps.

Best regards,

There were some changes done recently on the "Place items on a displaced surface" effect To use the actual version:
  • Instance the map used for displacement to Forest's Material > Get Color from Map slot under the Modify panel
  • Check the As Texture option
  • Go to the Effects roll-out and Load the Scatter on Displaced Surfaces effect or Import the New_Displacement.eff file in case you're using older FP version.
  • Select the DisplaceAmount parameter and click on the Pick button. Select the maxLevel track from the CoronaDisplacementMod (or equivalent) modifier (alternatively you can enter a value manually by using the New_Displacement_values.eff file instead)
Attaching a sample scene.

Thanks in advance for any further comments you can share with us / our user community.

Best regards,

Hi Adam,

Though when using the Free Object option, the RailClone ignores the spline's position being still deformed by its shape (which allows you to move the RailClone geometry freely in the scene – based on the RC's Pivot Point position), the Clipping Area is still being calculated upon the world spline position. We’ll check what can be done in future versions.

For this kind of purposes, you might consider using the "Style Linking" feature (it allows you to link the RC object to another, so the Style changes done on Master are dynamically reproduced on Slave(s)).  As mentioned in our on-line reference guide: "Parameter values are copied from the master as well, except those that have been modified by the user. In that way, you can have several RailClone objects, all controlled from a single master style, but each with independent local settings. This mechanism works in the same way than Library/Copy Style operations, and the behavior can be modified from "General" settings."

In case, you’re interested in instancing the “source RC object” without modifications, using the Forest Pack plug-in to distribute these might be the preferable option.

Hope that helps.

I've got a problem with a "Place items on a displaced surface" effect and Corona. I tried to setup everything in both techniques (old and new one) and everytime I'm trying to setup DisplaceAmount and connect it to maxLevel from CoronaDisplacementMod Forest disappear and doesn't render any objects. Is there any solution to that?

Ahh fantastic. Would that be because I had messed with the output of the noise map to get the contrast I wanted. Anyway, that's a great help, I'll persevere with it.

Strange, i cannot reproduce that issue. I did the following:

1) Dropped a VRayMtl from the Material Editor to "Cylinder001" (grass blade).
2) Removed the material assigned in Forest002->Geometry->Material  (if not the materials are not propagated from the inner correctly).

I'm using FP 6.0.1, Max 2016 and V-Ray 3.60.04

Hi, the crash is not caused by V-Ray, but a strange issue with the Noise map, which is returning a negative value in frame 35 (something as -0.001).
That value is not expected by Forest, and it triggers an error choosing the animation sample.

I've added a fix in the code to handle this case. It will included in the next FP6 update.

Meanwhile, you would add a "Color correction" map to the Noise, to make the texture a bit brighter and convert the -0.001 to a positive value.
I've tried with Brightness = 1.0 (as shown in the attached image) and it seems to solve the problem.

Hi, I had the same problem so I used the 'free object' tick box, however this automatically moved the mesh to a random place in my scene, I then had to manually reposition it back, what is causing this to happen in the first place?

It also displays unusual or missing parts of my more complex systems like roofing / clipping - I think this is because I am using the spline as a clipping area for the tiles part - How can I get around this as I effectively want to have a house which is grouped full of rail clones / objects and reference them around a scene without having all the rail clones go crazy on me - as an update to the software can we not include any clipping splines as part of the 'free object' selection? It can still be affected by the orginal Spline however I could freely move copys of the roof without line work? I effectively only want one original house type to define all of it's copys.

Thank You.
no crash, but master FP still empty without geometry:

Please, try assigning some material to the inner FP. That solves the crash.

In FP6, the viewport materials ("FP ColorID") are not generated in render. In this case, Forest was creating a multi-sub without any material, crashing V-Ray.
I've added a fix in the code to handle the no-materials case.
