Awkward Roof
« on: December 11, 2018, 09:59:40 AM »
I need to tile a roof with cedar shingles that's an awkward shape - image attached. I've had no problems in the past with simple pitched roofs but this one has me stumped.

Is there a way to do this with RailClone?

I'm slowly getting somewhere with this and am starting to grasp how it all works.

The issue I'm stuck with is that I need to rotate the tiles to be diamonds. When I rotate them in their transform they rotate but (unsurprisingly) completely mess with the spacing and I can't work out how to solve it. Image attached showing what happens. Is this issue that I'm using the roof tile macro? Does it need to be set up without that to allow more control in the spacing?

Stripped down file link here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xitgnp088t82qgy/Roof_Test_001.max?dl=0

For info, there's the RailClone roof which is morphed into the funnel shape using the Skin Wrap and a copy of the RC object which the one I've been using to test a diamond shape tile (or tile rotated by 45˚).

You don't need Roof Macro for 45 degree tiles:

Attaching file.

Thank you for this. Unfortunately I'm on Max 2017 so can't open the file you attached. Any chance you could re-attach as an older version?

Thanks. Decided I should go with the actual geometry that will be used rather than the box which I was using to practise. I've been running through the tutorials again to get myself back up to speed on organising the roof tiles but constantly tying myself in knots. No matter what I try I cannot recreate the attached image.

I've created new geometry, a diamond along with a 'tile and a half' according to Creating Roofs with RailClone tutorial to allow the offset. I've wired it to a transform and Array 2S as per your file. What I can't grasp is how to interlock the tiles with a slight overlap to produce the effect in the attached image. Adjusting padding with negative values won't overlap when it's wired to a sequence.

Any help would be very much appreciated, I seem to be going in circles. Stripped version of the scene attached also - reset most of the values as it's become a mess.

If anyone's still following(!) I've tweaked the geometry in a vain attempt to start from scratch but I still cannot get every second row to overlap by half. Is this possible in any way?

Thank you. Bit rusty with RC, don't get to use it often enough but will put some time in.

Thanks again for your help, now to get it to wrap to the roof shape.
