display option - desire to render but show anything in viewport

maybe this already exists in a new version, I'm using version 3.0.7

In the viewport I'm wishing for a way to not display anything at all besides the railclone object icon.
Is that possible? Right now I have them set to points-cloud at 1% density and it still chugs navigating the viewport

Display>Boxes usually work the best but since RC4 there is a Quick Mesh mode and RC5 introduced Proxy Cache (support Box and Quick Mesh). So, I highly recommend the upgrade.
But, in the end, most of it depends on your hardware configuration.

Thanks, you're right boxes is SO much smoother in the viewport. I wasn't expecting that.
